September marks a transition. After the openness and expansion of summer, nature gradually begins to slow down. The days grow shorter, the light changes, and our rhythm naturally shifts.
In traditional Chinese medicine, fall corresponds to the Metal element and the Lung. It is a time associated with the movement of withdrawal, gathering, and a return to the essentials.
The Huangdi Neijing, in its chapter on adapting to the four seasons, describes autumn as a time when one should “gather the spirit and Qi” and allow energy to turn more inward. In particular, the text recommends maintaining serenity and adopting a calmer pace to align with the natural rhythm of the season.
The Lung, associated with Metal, governs Qi and breathing. Symbolically, it also reminds us of our ability to welcome and then let go. Fall can thus become an invitation to make room: in our surroundings, in our schedule, but also in our minds.
Bach Flower of the Month: Walnut
Walnut can be a beautiful flower to use during this time of transition. In Dr. Bach’s system, Walnut is traditionally associated with periods of change and sensitivity to external influences.
Just like autumn, it can symbolically mark the transition from one cycle to another: staying centered while embracing change.
September thus invites us not to hold on to what must change, but to go with the flow with awareness and serenity.
Breathe. Lighten up. Let go. And get back to what really matters.
